Book Review of The Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux: The Story of a Soul

Helpful Score: 2

"Story of a Soul" is an extraordinary book, but this translation, by John Beevers, is an obsolete translation of a manuscript that does not represent Therese's authentic work. Therese's sister Pauline, Mother Agnes of Jesus, heavily edited the manuscript, making about seven thousand changes to what Therese wrote. Until 1956 this edited manuscript was the only one available, and Beevers, a British layman who loved Therese very much, translated it into English.

If you want to read a translation of Therese's authentic manuscripts, read the edition of "Story of a Soul" published by ICS Publications and translated by Fr. John Clarke, O.C.D. It has gone into three editions and is acknowledged as the best English translation (and the only English translation of St. Therese's authentic manuscript).
