This novel, along with the film version that earned actress Kate Winslet her first Oscar, is a devastating read that asks important questions about humanity, love, and moral responsibility, set against the viscious backdrop of Holocaust-era Germany. The characters in this book are written truthfully, and the horrors of the plot are revealed gently but disturbingly, and by the end of the novel the reader finds him or herself at a moral and ethical crossroads with no direction as to where to go from there.
